Hand Appliqued Quilt (Ft. Tula Pink Fabric)

I am so excited to finish this quilt top and share it with you! I’ve been wanting to make a hand appliqued quilt for a long time, but I couldn’t find a method to use. However, after several trials, I found that freezer paper and a glue stick worked very well for me.

I suppose this method might take a couple of additional steps compared to the needle turn method. But, taming the fabric without freezer paper took too much time, and the results weren’t that great either. So, I stick to freezer paper and a glue stick!

Pattern

I used applique patterns from a book that I’ve owned for a long time, which is called Applique Designs by Faye Anderson. When I learned quilting for the first time, this book was a big hit among the quilters in Korea. And naturally, hoping to make it someday, I purchased the book. There are so many cute applique designs in the book, along with some instructions.

Fabric

A while ago, I purchased Tula Pink fat quarter bundles to make an EPP quilt. I follow several EPP quilters on Instagram, and their fussy cuts and fabric arrangements are just so fabulous that I wanted to try them. But soon I realized that Tula Pink fabric is not my style. And my EPP project was paused. But, when I was looking through my book stash to find the next project, it clicked!

The Tula Pink fabric was perfect for those applique designs! It’s vivid and bold colors and designs certainly pop out from black background. Also, there are so many possibilities for fussy cuts, which I wanted to achieve with EPP.

Thread

I used Aurifil cotton 50wt and 80wt. I do not have all the matching colors. I tend to use neutrals such as warm/cool gray and off white. I love how 80w blends into fabric, but it breaks a lot. I might try Efina cotton 60wt from Wonderfil.

Now, I just need to quilt it, and it will take some time to come up with quilting ideas. But I am already excited about it!
