Davis’ Sampler Block 3 **Sympathy” Tutorial

Welcome back to my tutorial!

This is my 3rd block for Davis’ Sampler. I named it “Sympathy”. It is a beginner friendly block, yet very pretty and useful for any projects! To make this block, we will use Corner Triangles, Nine Patch, and Appliqué technique.

For this, I used batik fabric rather than cute pink/red print fabric (,which I really like) for personal reasons. However, I think this block will look great with bright pretty pink fabric as well. So, here we go!

***Note that the finished block size does not include seam allowances.***

Materials & Tools

To make this block, I used 4 different fabrics - Dark color (B), background (A, C, E), light color (D), and medium/dark (Heart).

For hand appliqué, I used Wash-away appliqué sheet (or freezer paper), fabric glue stick, matching thread, and appliqué needle.

Cutting Instruction

Background fabric:

A: Cut 8 of 2 1/2” Squares

C: Cut 4 of 8 1/2” x 2 1/2” Strips

E: Cut 1 of 4 1/2” Square

Dark Fabric

B: Cut 16 of 11/2” Squares

Light Fabric

D: Cut 4 of 4 1/2” x 2 1/2” Strips

Medium Dark for Heart

Cut 1 of 7” Square

Making Corner Triangle Units

1. Position a Square B on Square A right side together as as shown below. Then, sew the square diagonally as marked. You might want to draw a line if you don’t have any guide lines on your sewing machine.

Trim the corner with 1/4” seam allowance, and press.

2. Next, we will assemble the strips. You will need 2 of each strip (C and D), and 8 of Corner Triangle units. Attach one Corner Triangle unit to each side as shown below.

3. Sew strip D and square E.

4. Now time to assemble all together!

Appliqué

5. For this block, I did needle turn appliqué with wash away appliqué sheet. You can also use regular freezer paper. But, make sure to remove it once appliqué is done.

First, iron the template (wash away appliqué sheet or freezer paper) on the wrong side of the fabric. Make suer the shiny side is down to the fabric.

Cut out the shape with 1/4” seam allowance. Clip the point in the middle - just a little above the template.

Then, glue the seam to the template to form the shape.

6. Mark the center of each strip and the square in the middle to position the hearts. Then, appliqué each heart.

There you go! You just completed “Sympathy” block! I hope you enjoyed it!
