Rose Sampler Hand Appliqué Quilt (in progress)

Happy New Year, quilting friends!

I’ve been a quilter for 20 years, since I was in college. And there were a couple of quilts that I’ve been wanting to make. This Rose Sampler Supreme by Rosemary Makhan is one of them. When I saw this quilt at my favorite shop in Incheon, I was determined to make it someday. And I think I am almost there!

Color Theme

I am a huge fan of pink. However, there are so many pink versions of this quilt, and I wanted something different. I looked through my fabric stash and found a decent amount of batik fabric from the previous project. As much as I like the sampler’s traditional look, I wanted to try vivid batik prints and colors. I ended up buying a few more fat quarters, but I am satisfied with the selection.

Hand Applique

I love the look of the hand applique. I love its pops and neat stitches. However, I have to admit that it takes lots of patience and skills, and I knew I needed to practice it before I jump into the project. There are several approaches to achieving hand applique. I tried a few on the other project, and decided to go with freezer paper and gluestick method.

I cut out the back of the applique, as I think it gives a nice texture and a comfortable setting.

Blocks

I completed 9 blocks from the book (I think there are a total of 20). I might try a few more, but now I plan to add blank blocks between each sampler block. And add coordinating quilting to the applique blocks.

Happy quilting, and stay tuned!
