My Favorite Rulers for Longarm Quilting

Hello Quilting Friends! If you are a longarm quilter, you will agree with me that getting a longarm machine wasn’t the end of big purchases. After getting a machine($$$), there are also so many little things you need in order to make your quilting efficient and enjoyable. And, we can’t miss rulers! As you know there are tons of options, and it is a huge investment. To help you decide which ruler to buy, I am sharing my favorite rulers here.

Rulers are definitely one of the must items if you do hand guided quilting. But, how many rulers do you need? It depends. If you feel somewhat confident, you only need basic shape rulers such as straight and curved (and depending on your quilting style maybe circle rulers). There are some rulers with unique designs like heart, feather, and so on. But, I think those unique shapes can be done by free motion quilting (FMQ), and I think with FMQ, quilting looks more natural and organic.

So, here is a few rulers that I use the most.

4-n-1 Mini from Piece N Quilt

I use this ruler for literally every project. It has all the shapes (straight and curves) I need. But, the reason I like this ruler so much is that it has very thin lines that give you the best visibility while quilting! One thing I wish it had is vertical perpendicular lines along with horizontal lines and center marks on the curves. But, I use tape or a sharpie to mark as needed, and works out well.

I also have the mini In and Out which is a pair to this ruler. But, I rarely use it due to its awkward shape.

Curved Rulers from Julia Quiltoff

She has a variety of curved rulers, and I found the #2, 3, 4, 5 very useful. They are perfect for bigger blocks and border designs. And, the green acrylic is very visible and easy to find in the midst of all the quilting stuff . The rulers with no color tend to blend with everything, and you never spot them quick enough!

I also have her large quilting curve set. But I haven’t had a chance to use those large size curve yet.

I would’ve got the curved rulers from the Quilted Pineapple because they have more reference lines. However, they only sell rulers as a set, and I wanted to buy one at a time as needed. But, Julia Quiltoff worked out well for me.

Straight Rulers from the Quilted Pineapple

As far as I consider, these are the best straight rulers. I wish I knew about them before I purchased “not my favorite” straight rulers. These rulers have all the marks I need and 45 degree angle for every two inches! I like its thin lines and clear visibility. I happened to purchase a set, but I think 12” would’ve been the best choice.

So, here they are! My favorite rulers for quilting! I hope this post helps you make decisions to buy ruler!

Thank you for stopping by!
