Davis’ Sampler Block 2 **Wishes** Tutorial

Welcome Friends!

This is the second block of Davis’ Sampler project, Wishes! This block includes Half Square Triangle units, Flying Geese, and a Square in a Square!

This sampler project has multiple purposes, and one of them is to learn about colors. Honestly, I do not have a good sense of colors. Knowing that, it always made me hesitate to start a new project worrying about possible failure 😞 . But, I determined to overcome the fear and become flexible to use colors. Also, rather than buying new fabrics, I decided to use my old fabrics before I make the complete set.

I have made several of this block using different color combination, and I loved the process and result. Hope you too have fun playing with colors!

To make this block, you will need 4 different fabrics - dark print (A), contrast print (E), medium print (B) or solid, and background (C).

Just like the Block 1 Celebration, I divided the block into 3 mini blocks as seen below. You will need to make four of B1 & B2, and one of B3.

To set the seams, I suggest ‘open seams’ to make it simple.

Cutting Instruction

B1

A: Cut 8 of 2 1/2” Squares

B: Cut 4 of 2 7/8” Squares

C: Cut 4 of 2 7/8” Squares

B2

D: Cut 4 of 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” Rectangles

E: Cut 1 of 5 1/4” Square

F: Cut 4 of 2 7/8” Squares

B3

G: Cut 4 of 2 1/2” Squares

H: Cut 1 of 4 1/2” Square

Making Triangles

B1 & B2

  1. Cut the Fabric B, C (B1), and F (B2) squares once diagonally to make Half Square Triangles (HST).

Sewing Instruction

B1 Half Square Triangle units

1. With right sides together, stitch 8 sets of triangle B and C. Iron to set seams, and cut the dog ears 🐶.

2. Right side together, stitch square A and B/C units from step 1. Press to set the seams.

3. Stitch the units from step 2 together as shown below.

B2 Flying Geese

4. To make Flying Geese blocks, stitch HST F and QST E right side together as shown below. To save time, sew one side of four of QST E (chain stitching), press. Then, sew the other side, press, and trim the dog ears.

5. Stitch Flying Geese units from step 4 and rectangle D.

B3 Square in a Square

6. Right side together, layer one of the G squares on the Square H as shown below. Then, sew them together diagonally. You can draw a line as a guide. I used guide tape, and just match the corner with the center line.

Repeat the process to the opposite side before press and trim.

7. Trim the corner leaving 1/4” seam allowance. Press to set the seams.

Repeat the same process to the other corners.
