Free Quilt Block Pattern-Sparkles (Scrap Fabric Friendly)

Welcome back to my blog! I am so excited to share my first block pattern with you. This is completely free and scrap fabric friendly! I enjoyed making these blocks with my scrap fabric so much, and I hope you enjoy it too.

All the instructions are in the pattern. However, I wanted to share some additional information that I learned by testing the block in this post. So, please read this post and the pattern before starting the process.

Scrappy version of Sparkles Block-I had fun picking fabrics.

I used Tula Pink scrap fabric for these two.

Drawing a diagonal line

To draw a diagonal line, I simply use a mechanical pencil. The line is also a cutting line once the unit is done, so I don’t worry about erasing it. You can also use a water-soluble marker. However, I found it too thick to get an accurate 1/4” seam allowance.

Pressing

I recommend pressing before opening up the unit to set the seam. It will secure the straight seam line, which helps the trimming process and gives an accurate unit size.

When I piece lots of triangles, I like to press to open seams to avoid any bulky corners.

Trimming

To trim the QST units, I use this slotted ruler. It is a great tool, but it took me some time to get used to it. I found that if you align the stitch line exactly on the dotted line on the ruler, you get a bit smaller unit than what it should be. So, when I trim, I place the dotted line a bit above the stitch line to get the accurate size.

Achieving a scant 1/4” seam

Since the block is tightly pieced, using a scant 1/4” (a hair less than 1/4”) is very crucial. In order to achieve it, I highly recommend making one or two blocks or mini units to test. Using a 1/4” foot helps a lot. However, depending on your sewing style, it can vary.

*1/4” foot for Juki TL model

I hope you enjoy making the block, and please share your creation with @piercestquilting and #piercestquilting.
