*Binding Tutorial 2* Binding by Machine in Two Different Ways

Welcome to the Binding Tutorial 2! In this post, we are going to attach the binding tape we made from the previous post.

So, as I mentioned in the title, I am going to share two different ways to attach binding to your beautiful quilts. I can’t say which way is better than the other, because both have pros and cons. Please try both, and sees what works best for your quilt.

Before Start

  • Start stitching with at least 6” of tail. You will need this loose end to connect to the other end later.

  • Finishing the corners applies the same for both methods.

1. Front to Front

As you can guess, you attach the binding to the front first. Then, you finish the binding by machine on the front as well. However, there are many quilters who use this method, but finish it from the backside by hand stitching.

For this method, basting is highly recommended. To baste, you can use fabric glue, washable school glue, or wonder clips. I use fabric glue on the corners, and hold it with wonder clips until the glue dries out (some people use an iron to set the glue basting as well). Then, I use wonder clips to hold the rest of the binding.

To finish it from the front, using an edge food helps a lot! If you don’t have one, don’t worry. Just go slow carefully. The goal is to stitch as close as possible to the binding.

2. Back to Front

For this method, you attach the binding to the back side of your quilt first, then finish it from the front. I use this method most of the time because I don’t need to baste the binding, especially the corners.

For the corners, follow the diagram above, but use a wonder clip or fingers to hold it. Continue to sew until you get to the corner, and make sure to catch the tip of the corner. Then turn it around, and keep sewing.

3. Jointing the binding ends.

1. If your binding tape is connected straight, you will sew the ends together as shwon.

2. For the diagonal joint, layer two ends perpendicularly right sides together as shown.

Here we go! Now, we finished our binding! I hope this helps you bind your quilts beautifully, and feel free to ask me any questions! Thank you so much!
